The Mr Varma Show

A fun and interactive way to learn English is through whimsical trivia questions! That is what happened in SFXC this week. Students were given a time limit to answer questions and brainteasers during their English class and were also asked to submit their own riddles for a display in the school foyer. The questions were a mixture of general knowledge, such as what is the largest country in the world and what is 7 x 9 = ? to idiosyncrasies which meant that the answer was in the question… for example, what word in the English language is always spelled incorrectly? – (the answer is of course, incorrectly) – there were even a few questions which enabled the students to learn vocabulary and idioms unique to the English language. What was more fun was that the students were given a series of tongue twisters to perform with each other – the best students were timed in a ‘grand finale’ during Thursday’s assembly. We can learn a lot of English through these types of activities and above all have a great time!

60th Graduation Ceremony

We deeply appreciate Principal Wong of Lau Wong Fat Secondary School for lending us their school hall to hold our 60th Graduation Ceremony on Saturday, 23rd May 2015, as our school hall was undergoing repair work.

We were honoured to have invited Mr. Ling (Director of Planning of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and Chairman of the Metro Planning Committee and Rural & New Town Planning Committee of the Town Planning Board), Mrs. Ling, IMC managers and former principals to present graduation certificates to our graduates and witness their success.

Although their secondary school life has ended, we believe they are ready to embrace the many exciting opportunities and possibilities ahead. We wish them every success and hope they will always bear in mind our Xaverian spirit – Gentle in Manner, Resolute in Action!

F.5 Parents’ Gathering

On 9th May, parents of F.5 students attended the seminar which covered a number of issues, including academic and career paths of their children, stress management, and many more. Two F6 students were also invited to share their perspectives. After the seminar, the parents had an opportunity to meet the Form Teachers to discuss and exchange ideas. We thank them for their presence and support, which made the evening a meaningful one to both parents and teachers.

Inter-school English Presentation

Students from St Francis Xavier’s College were invited to participate in an Inter-school Theme Presentation at Tak Oi Secondary School. The theme was about promoting creativity and critical thinking in Hong Kong schools and could be in any form, such as PowerPoint presentation, role play or drama production. The three Xaverians presented their idea on the topic in the form of a radio broadcast, which included witty retorts and catchphrases which would easily maintain the “listeners’” interest, not only in the audience but also if it were a podcast. Students were then asked questions from the other participating schools and had another time limit to respond. Although not a competition per se, all other schools congratulated the Boys on their exemplary and innovative presentation and on their outstanding command of the English language! It’s is clear that it is the students of SFXC who are the creative critical thinkers in Hong Kong schools!
