Marists’ Background

The approaching 60th anniversary with the theme “In the Way of the Marists” is a prompt for Xaverians to reflect on their knowledge and understanding of the Marist Brothers and school history. Principal Iu shared the Marists’ background and reminded students about the two saints, St. Francis Xavier and Marcellin Champagnat, in which their name, educational perspective and practice were descended to our generation today. To pass down the customs and means of cultivation nurtured by the Marist Brothers, the way of the Marists will continue to sustain and derive for the good of the young and neglected.

Where there is a will, there is a way

Based on the TV programme of “My Sky”, Mr. Shing shared that young people in Hong Kong nowadays are being too overprotected by their parents. Children heavily depend on their parents as they would do everything for them. It is also problematic that young adults in the workplace are expecting rewarding outcomes without putting in any effort.

Students are reminded to be resolute in action and diligently responsible in their studies or duties. Be determined to learn and possess a good attitude. Do not solely rely on others and take things for granted. When you face failure, try again… and again… keep on trying until you succeed.

In the Way of the Marists

Mr. Leung, our vice-principal, reminded students of the theme of the 60th school anniversary, “In the way of the Marists”. The theme emphasizes how the Marist Brothers educate young people with their 5 distinctive styles: Simplicity, Presence, Family Spirit, Love of Work and In the way of Mary. It was reminded that we should subsist and embed these 5 distinctive styles in our attitude and daily life so as to carry out the Marist Brothers’ devoted conventions.

Brother John talked about the right attitude on becoming successful in life. Although our attitude may be inherited, there are also three areas of life in which our attitude is formed, 1) sense of belonging, 2) sense of worth, and 3) sense of competence. Motivation is important to cultivate positive attitudes. As attitude determines our destiny, students are reminded to learn from their mistakes, look beyond them, and value successful experiences.

Goal Setting

Principal Iu shared a study conducted by the Harvard Business School on goal setting and that it would lead to success. Some people do not set goals because they may not realize the importance of goals, they do not know how to set goals, and they fear failure or rejection. It was emphasized that students should identify the things they want in life and make plans to help them achieve those things.

Setting goals allows one to:

    1.    Take control of his/her life
    2.    Focus on the important things
    3.    Make good decisions
    4.    Finish the task efficiently
    5.    Be self-confident and enthusiastic
    6.    Make progress
    7.    Be closer to success
